Border Security Supported by Bigots
10 May 2007It’s been a while since I posted about Lindsey Graham, though you may notice the Lindsey Graham Watch link above. Long time readers know that I am no fan of Senator Graham. I worked for his election and I have been disappointed over and over ever since. Now there’s another idiotic statement coming from this glory hound’s mouth. Watch this YouTube video.
So Graham believes that those of us who oppose illegal immigration are bigots? While I’m sure there are those who simply do not like Hispanics, the vast majority of American’s who oppose illegal immigration do so not on the basis of race; they oppose it on the basis of American sovereignty. They do so on the basis of national security. They do so because illegal aliens are decimating our country.
It has nothing to do with race. I personally welcome immigrants from most anywhere who enter this country legally and follow the prescribed path to obtaining US citizenship. I have no problem with that. What I have a problem with is 12-20 million people who come here illegally and continue to break our laws. I’d oppose that no matter what race those people are.
Senator Graham understands all this. He knows full well that we are not racists or bigots. He is simply demagoguing this issue in order to shut us up or marginalize us. Well it won’t work Senator Graham. We will not be silenced. We will not shut up. And I promise that you will have your work cut out for you if you think you will retain your seat in the Senate after the ’08 election. I and others like me will work tirelessly to defeat you because you have no interest in what’s right for America. You are only interested in promoting yourself at the expense of America.
Name for me one other junior Senator with less than one term under his belt who gets 50% of the face time that Senator Graham gets. It is not simply coincidence and it certainly isn’t that he’s so smart and appealing. It is only because Senator Graham does whatever it takes to get attention. As the saying goes, if his grandmother gets between him and a TV camera, she better be darned quick because he will surely knock her to the ground running for that camera.

Immigration is one of the things that makes our country great, but there needs to be an order to things. Just like all of the other immigrants that have come here over the years, newcomers need to show that they are able to care for themselves and their families financially, that they are able to contribute to our society, and that they are free from contagious diseases.

What I failed to point out in the post is that Graham did what some many on his side do. They equate illegal immigrants with legal. The fellow Graham refers to may not have been an immigrant at all, we don’t know. But the issue certainly isn’t nationality. It is legal status. Are you here legally or not.
I am so tired of this attempt define those of us who want to secure our borders as bigots and racists. We are not. We simply want to live in a country where the law actually means something. The demagoguery of President Bush and Lindsey Graham does not change the truth. It only demonstrates the weakness of their own arguments that they have to stoop to such tactics.

I’ve been continually frustrated as of late with ignorant conservatives allowing liberals to frame the debate as being between those who are “pro-immigration” and those who are “anti-immigration.” I’m not “anti-immigration,” I’m “anti-breaking-the-law.” I can’t count the number of times lately I’ve heard so-called conservatives say “I like so-and-so because he’s ‘anti-immigration.’”

Yes, we have not been good at framing the debate and defining the terms. That’s one reason for the definitions section of this blog. Although, I haven’t been very good at updating the definitions, they are worth looking at and I’ll try to do more there.
