Navy Tragedy

21 April 2007

I am a huge fan of military air shows. The most recent air show at the Charleston Air Force Base was a wonderful event and my family had a great time there. So the tragic crash today of a Navy F/A-18 from the Blue Angels squadron, flying an air show in Beaufort, SC, saddens me immeasurably.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the Blue Angels are the Navy’s precision flight team known for amazing aerial stunts. The Blue Angels were featured at the Charleston Air show last year.

According to witnesses one jet went below the tree line and did not emerge. Moments later witnesses saw a huge cloud of black smoke in the sky. According to CNN the pilot was killed in the crash.

Fighter pilots take huge risks every time they enter the cockpit of their aircraft. For Navy fighter pilots the risks are typically greater because they fly off the deck of a moving aircraft carrier. One of the primary jobs of the Blue Angels is to demonstrate the skill and dedication of this pilots and increase recruiting. The Blue Angels have been very effective in this regard. From the official web site of the Blue Angels:

The Blue Angels’ mission is to enhance Navy and Marine Corps recruiting efforts and to represent the naval service to the United States, its elected leadership and foreign nations. The Blue Angels serve as positive role models and goodwill ambassadors for the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps.

The Blue Angels are based at Pensacola Naval Air Station.
