A Glimmer of Hope

26 March 2007

The midterm elections in November left many conservatives disappointed. The reaction of Republicans still in office turned disappointment into disillusionment for many of us. Now, with the current slate of Republican presidential candidates, we have been downright depressed. There hasn’t been a single candidate I could get excited about and most I couldn’t even hold my nose and vote for.

Perhaps there is some sunshine on the horizon. Many in the blogosphere have been active in trying to draft Fred Thompson to run and it’s looking more and more like he may just go for it.

If you are unfamiliar with Fred Thompson, he is a former Senator from Tennessee, having won Al Gore’s seat when he stepped down to be Vice President. Thompson has been in many feature films and television shows including Law and Order. He made his first mark in politics as the minority counsel in the Watergate hearings. He is an accomplished attorney and an able statesman. Thompson has a unique ability to communicate in a straight forward, understandable manner.

Thompson is a conservative. He has taken positions against abortion, same sex marriage and gun control and for smaller government, lower taxes and border security.

For the first time since the elections I am beginning to feel energized. While Thompson has not announced his candidacy, he has indicated a strong interest. Should he chose to enter the race, he is a candidate I could whole heartedly support and work for. He’s already been endorsed by another man I admire, J.C. Watts.

Thompson has his problems. For one, he is divorced and remarried. His divorce, however, was more than 20 years ago while his remarriage was recent. He also supported and voted for McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform, one of my hot button issues. He seems to be having second thoughts about that now, saying maybe we should remove all limits and impose strict reporting requirements with harsh penalties. That is a proposal I have long supported.

Thompson was also a co-chair of McCain’s last presidential bid. That certainly gives me pause. But Thompson seems to get it when it comes to the problems with Republicans in Congress. He believes, for example, that Republicans lost big in November because of run away spending rather than the Iraq war, a point I’ve made over and over.

All in all I am excited about the prospect of a Thompson candidacy. And I think McCain, Giuliani, et. al. are nervously looking over their shoulders hoping he doesn’t run. This could be just what conservatives, and the Republican Party, need!

Kudos on FRED THOMPSON! I’ve been waiting for you to blog about THIS man. Not only do I agree with you about Fred Thompson, I am totally convinced that should he step into the race, he WILL absolutely take the Republican nomination! No question about it. The others should be completely nervous.
