Election Returns

7 November 2006

The party was great, our governor in South Carolina, Mark Sanford, has won reelection, and now I’m back home watching the returns again. As I said earlier, I expect to be here all night. The chat room is open and I’m here to chat.

So far we’ve pretty much dodged the bullet on the Senate. It looks like the GOP has held on there. The House is another matter and it’s too early yet to call that one. But we still have hope and I still believe we’ll pull it out.

Here in South Carolina, as I said, Mark Sanford has won reelection. Our Lt Governor, Andre Bower, is in a battle for his job. With 91% of precincts reporting he is tied with his opponent. But the General Assembly remains firmly in the hands of the GOP so it’s not a bad night for the state.

What races are you following? What close races did you vote in? Chime on in folks. There’s a long way to go tonight and I could use the company.

UPDATE: At 11:18 P.M FOX News has called the Dems the winners for control of the House.  My count doesn’t add up to that and I’m not yet convinced but they’ve called it.  We’ll see if they are right.

UPDATE: Okay, at 11;57 P.M. I concede.  The dems have won the House.  Heaven help us all.  I’m tempted to start analysing the lose but I’ll hold off on that.  Republicans have some serious soul searching to do and if they don’t properly understand what’s happened and why, they will lose even more in ’08.  If they learn the right lessons, with help from liberals in the House, they will regain control in ’08 and keep the White House.  But those are some mighty big ifs.

UPDATE: It’s looking more and more like Talent will lose in Missouri.  He’s down 15k votes with 85% counted and I believe the remaining 15% are in democrat strongholds.  Corker has held on the win in Tennessee.  Montana has only counted 59% of precincts but Burns is down 14k votes so it doesn’t look good.  Virginia has counted almost all the vote and it is a virtual tie.  Allen is down by 1500 votes, well within the recount range and there are still some absentee ballots and provisional ballots to count.  Who knows where that one will end up?  The bottom line?  I have no idea who will have control of the Senate.  But the odds seem to be stacking up in favor of the dems.

Montana isn’t going to be decided for a while yet and Virginia isn’t going to be decided tonight at all.  So, while I’m going to be here for a while yet, I’m leaving the chat room and it won’t be that long before I hit the sack.  Tomorrow there will be plenty of time for recriminations and reflection.

UPDATE: Well, Talent just gave his concession speech.  Looking worse and worse!  It’s going to come down to Allen in Virginia and that may take days.  And with that update, I’m going to bed.

Digg!
