Blog Comments
20 September 2006Okay folks, I read the stats for my blog every day and I know that I’m getting some repeat traffic. I’ve got a long way to go but at least a few of you seem to believe this blog is worth reading. So my question is, why is no one commenting? Is it the requirement to register? If so, let me first tell you that no one but me sees your registration and the only reason for it is to be able to have some measure of control. I’m not going to sell your registration information or give it away or spam you myself. The only thing that will be done with it is to use it to ban someone if they get totally out of control.
Secondly, I don’t require registration so I can keep people out who disagree with me. In fact, I want people who disagree to comment. The only thing I want to prevent is things like threats and getting totally our of control. If you want to tell me how stupid my opinion is, have at it. Your post will remain and you will not be banned for posting it.
At the top of the page you will find a link to my comment policy. I think it’s pretty reasonable but I’m also amenable to changing it if there is a need. If you think there’s a problem with it, by all means, let me know. Make a good case and I’ll consider making changes.
The bottom line is, I want to stimulate discussion. None of us has a monopoly on truth, not even me. While some may not see me as such, I am open minded. If you present a solid argument that I can’t refute there’s a good chance I’ll at least modify my position. I’ve certainly done it plenty of times before. In truth, we only learn by talking to those who disagree with us. If the only people I ever talk to are those who agree with everything I say, I have no chance to learn anything new and I’m probably going to get tripped up. It’s called group think and I’m not interested in it.
So please, those of you who are coming back to see what I’ve written today, consider leaving a comment. Consider engaging in a discussion. Let’s build some community. And remember, liberals are welcome here. And if you want to call me a complete moron in your blog, go ahead and trackback. I’ll leave that in place too!

Most folks are commenting on the fly. It’s one thing to have to type in the odd combos of letters that some pages ask for, but for some of us, registering takes too much time. For example, I have registered a good 8 times at WordPress for different sites.
Also, the link to register is clear up at the top corner of the page. It ain’t exactly prominent. Again, we’re on the fly. You should, perhaps, get a registration link in there with the technorati, and Archive links.
And did you know that the comment box appears way down at the bottom of the page? I know you have a nice long sidebar, chock full of links. But that comment box is missing when the commentor hits the comment link. “What the …?” Not all of us will scroll all the way down to find it.
Me, I do it ’cause it’s 7:00 in the morning and it’s my day off! LOL
I think I’ll go look at some other posts now. Oh, by the way … I noticed an Archive gap from 2004 to 2006. Wha’ happened? Got busy with other things?

I’ll work on that comments link. As for the comment box, I’m not sure I understand. Are you saying the comment box is below the right side bar links? I’m using IE6 and the comment box appears directly below the post or the last comment. If you’ll clarify what you are seeing and what browser you’re using I’ll try to fix the problem.
The lone 2004 post is actually a paper I wrote back then on campigh finance reform. It was on my old blog but copying the whole blog was to much trouble but I thought having that paper was important.

I know it is very rare that I want to give my info regardless of the assurances. Besides, a person causing trouble would just log in under a different name, right?

I’m using the Avant browser – it runs on the IE engine – and the IE under it is either IE6 or IE7.
Right now the comment box is right below and to the right of the left sidebar.
Also, I added you to my own blogroll. Ain’t I a pip? LOL

What is your screen resolution benning? I also use Avant Browser and it displays properly. I do know that in any browser, if the disply is too narrow to fit, the coment box will move to the bottom. I confirmed that in my browser by making it smaller side to side.
Italyeventually, there are ways with registration to block someone even if they attempt to register again with another user name. It isn’t fool proof but it’s better than nothing.
