Katherine Harris Wins
12 September 2006Six months ago no one gave Katherine Harris any chance at all to win the Republican nomination for Senate in Florida, challenging incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. The Florida Republican party and the national Republican party both tried to get Harris to quit. When she refused to do so they recruited candidates to run against her. Without any support from her party, Harris last Tuesday won the nomination.
Why was her party so staunchly against her? Why would Republicans be so adamantly opposed to someone who has been utterly loyal to them? Because they don’t think she can win. You’ll remember that it was Katherine Harris who was Florida Secretary of State during the 2000 election that was contested in the sunshine state. Harris certified the election thereby helping George Bush move into the White House.
Democrats have never forgiven Harris for simply doing her job. She held up under pressure and did the right thing and was publicly castigated for it. Perhaps you’ll recall the comments in the paper about her makeup and her appearance.
Well now Republicans believe that Harris’ past will come back to haunt them come November. They think Harris will energize the Democrats to come out and vote against her. Who knows, maybe they’re right. But what message does such a strategy send to other loyal Republicans? Doesn’t it say, don’t stick your neck out too far for us or we may just cut off your head?
Harris won the primary with a landslide, taking almost every precinct in Florida. I could be wrong but I have the feeling that Republicans will also be energized to come out and vote for Harris in November.
